Two local students shot hoops and ran drills with college coaches and athletes during basketball camp this summer at the University of North Carolina and North Carolina State University, thanks to Four County EMC’s Touchstone Energy Sports Camp scholarship program.

LaTyra English attended the Wolfpack Women’s Basketball Camp June 14-17 at N.C. State University in Raleigh. LaTyra attends Union Middle School and is the daughter of John and Angela English of Turkey.

Lukas Brown took to the court June 20-24 at the Roy Williams Carolina Basketball Camp at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. Lukas attends Chinquapin Elementary School and is the son of Phyllis Casteen of Wallace.

These scholarships are a fantastic way for young athletes to experience life on a college campus and learn from mentors at their favorite NCAA athletic programs,” said Gay Johnson, Director of Corporate Communications at Four County EMC. “We’re proud to continue our tradition of providing outstanding local students with opportunities to develop fundamental skills that will help them excel on the court and in the classroom.”

LaTyra and Lukas earned the all-expense paid scholarship by completing an application that included academics, community involvement and enthusiasm for sports. They are two of only 59 students selected in a highly competitive process to receive Touchstone Energy Sports Camp Scholarships from North Carolina's electric cooperatives this year.

During camp, students stayed in dorms on campus and worked directly with coaches to hone basketball skills and practice working cooperatively with teammates. The staff of the Wolfpack Women’s Basketball Camp included N.C. State women’s basketball coach Wes Moore, and his coaching staff and players. The Roy Williams camp was led by two-time NCAA national champion coach Roy Williams, his staff, and current and past Tar Heel basketball players.

This is the 12th year Four County EMC sponsored young women to attend an N.C. State women's basketball camp and the 10th year the cooperative has sent young men to the Roy Williams camp.
